Umbria: Orvieto town tour

Crossing the volcanic plateau where S.Cristina castle is  located to the east we pass by two towns watching the way to the Orvieto valley in Umbria . Descending along a winding road between olive trees and vineyards we have the fantastic view of Orvieto nested ontop of a hill of volcanic rock with its medieval walls and the famous Duomo dominating it.

Beside the Duomo with its magnificent facade , the Maurizio Tower, Torre del moro, and the S.Patrick well  are some of the attractions we can see in this town.

This  place is also a temple of good food , good wine like Orvieto classico and  and olive oil . Watch out dear ciclist and resist food temptations because on the way back we will have to climb the volcanic bank to reach the plateau  about 400m. above.

Tuscany: Pitigliano, Sovana, Sorano: fortresses in the rock

On the north west of the castle just as we enter Tuscany with the usual up an down of hills, we find the fortress towns of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana.

Pitigliano is the first one reknowned as little Jerusalem because it witholds one of the smallest jewish ghettos in Italy .Then Sovana a little jem , once a famous etruscan center , with an important tombstown.

Finally the breathtaking view of the XVI century Sorano fortress , built on the side of a gorge in strategic defensive position watching north.

The road in this area keeps climbing and descending quickly on steep hills and gorges, challenging but extremely beautiful. Definitely you will never get bored here.

Small towns between Toscana and Lazio. A taste of the mountains

On this strip of land between Tuscany and Lazio , we find an ideal place for cicling .Beautiful sceneries, mountains, hills, rivers will keep you company while your pedals keep spinning.

This tour touches a series of villages where time seems to have stopped. Onano , San Valentino,Montevitozzo. The are all positioned just below Monte Elmo ,close to mount Amiata. Here the road climbs the mountain for 6 or 7 km ,not too steep but long enough to keep you concentrated on your effort.

Proceno castle is the last hill before the Paglia river valley  that we touch and bounce back up along the old via cassia from Siena , often used by the giro d’Italia .At the top of the hill Roberto one of our friends waits in his bar for us with cold drinks before entering Acquapendente .From there the castle is only 10 km away.

Under the shade of Radicofani (SI) tower

The height of Torre di Radicofani, which belonged to Ghino di Tacco, dominates the entire route. We will climb in Trevinano for 10 km, on a bike-friendly rise, which has between the 21st and the 22nd kilometer a straight stretch with an incline between 8 and 9%. We will proceed for a hilly stretch for 13 km in the direction for Celle sul Rigo, passing from San Casciano Dei Bagni.

We will run down for 4 km and then we will face a rise of 11 km which takes to Radicofani, under the austere view of the tower. We will descend for 9 km until the SS Cassia, going on for 17 km along the Paglia’s Valley and we will climb again for 3 km until Acquapendente. We will finally go back to the Castle with 10 more km in light rise.

Mount Amiata: the big mountain

Mount Amiata is the big irresistible challenge for all the local ciclists. After an easy mostly downhill first part ,following the old roman road along the river Paglia . We finally start climbing 27 km of road , up along the mountain touching Piancastagnaio and Abbadia S.Salvatore ,through the old mines .the road winds up , through the chestnut woods for a time that seems neverending .Finally we reach the top at 1734 m. , a well deserved stop to refuel and take some pics and then down the steep roads of the southern side of the mountain.

The area is thick with woods , the air is cool and thin and you can feel the difference while you go down.

Watch out on the last part about 20 km there are ups and downs on the hills not to be undervalued. Finally the castle at 107 km.
